Prime8 – the weekly GGA web roundup 27/10/14

27th October 2014 0 comments Article Uncategorised
So it’s that time of year again when we here at GGA like to dress up like Michael Jackson in Thriller, go out, knock on strangers doors and tell them we’ll trash their property unless they give us free stuff.

Also, it’s Halloween, so we thought we’d do a bit of a tribute to that with this weeks Prime8. How do you like our spooky makeover? Terrifying eh? How scary are pumpkins?!

Here’s this weeks web roundup (spooky edition)…

Magic Leap
“Woooohahwooo!”*
You may not have heard about it yet but Magic Leap is set to be the future of computing technology. It’s a concept so big and game changing its already raised over half a billion dollars in investment from the likes of Google and Qualcomm. But what is it? Well that’s the question we all want an answer to…
                                                                                     *that’s a ghost noise

Hover ‘Bored’
“Mwaah-Ha-Ha!”*
This week we’ve finally seen the unveiling of a real life Back To The Future 2-style Hoverboard. That’s yesterdays news though and that story is everywhere so go find it yourself (I’m not your slave!). Instead here’s an article about how and when we could see all the other cool future toys seen in the BTTF films.
                                                                         *that’s an evil vampire laugh

Palo Alto is stupid. Discuss.
“Grrrrraahhh”*
Palo Alto is the town at the center of Silicon Valley and a bi-word for ridiculous hipster technology stories. Every big tech company you can name has a presence there and all the money and influence it exerts has affected everyone in the area. Here’s just one of a million bonkers stories you’ll hear about mad ol’ P.A.
*that’s something like Frankenstein’s monster

Almost famous
“Owwwoollllll!”*
Here’s my favourite startup success story of the year so far. A great blog on the creation, development and overwhelming initial success of Famous Outfits. It’s great because it tells you exactly what tools they used, how the work was split, and how the are measuring success.
                                                                                   *obviously a werewolf

Gamergate: Rise of the militant web idiot
“Eeeeekkkahhhrrr!”*
You may have heard the phrase Gamergate by now. It’s getting everywhere and is prime newsworthy stuff. It’s a story of 2 distinct tribes, multiple grey areas, ritual bullying, threats and journalistic integrity. Oh, and video games. A bit.
                                        *that’s a… I don’t know… a gremlin or something

Actual useful App alert!
“Ppffttttt”*
Google have taken it upon themselves to fight all of the fly-by-night pretenders who launch apps designed to tidy up your email inbox (and in turn, your life) with their app, Inbox. Its great. That’s it. Have a look at what it can do!
*that’s me running out of ideas

GGA’s website of the week
“….”*
James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem (awesome) created this website (also awesome) with IBM (meh) to collate noise from the US Tennis Open and convert it to music.
                                                                                                   *a pumpkin

… and finally.
“click”*
Following on from the Famous Outfits and Palo Alto stories above, here’s the funniest synopsis of the tech startup investment race I’ve read yet.
                                                                            *that’s me pressing ‘send’
