Prime8: The weekly GGA web roundup! 19/10/2015

19th October 2015 0 comments Article Uncategorised

This week The Apprentice showed us there’s still no shortage of silly people who’s main aim in life is to be a total a**e and do ‘business’ alongside a man who looks like a shaved Oscar the Grouch that lives in a sunbed. It also proved that when alcohol and Rugby is involved, the fact you’re quarter Irish is embellished somewhat. T’ be sure *hic*.

Here’s this weeks web roundup…

Instagram at 5

This week Instagram turned the ripe old age of 5 years old. It’s been a mad ol’ journey for the fan favourite app; starting life as something completely different before pivoting to become one of the best and most used pieces of tech on the planet. Here’s a review of the past 5 years from Instagram’s Mike Krieger, aptly called ‘war stories’.

Automate everything!

If you don’t automate your marketing you’re putting yourself at an immediate disadvantage nowadays. With the ever-growing ecosystem of growth marketers and automation tools it’s really easy to setup a digital marketing plan to suit your company but its just as easy to get lost in the sheer complexity of it all.

Never fear though, we’re here to help! Here’s a great starter guide and product list to get you doing the ‘automation shuffle’ (or something that references Strictly).

How to pretend your company is worth £billions

The crazy world of tech startups just got that little bit more crazy this week (whilst taking a few more steps to complete self-implosion) when WeWork, a company that RENTS OUT OFFICE SPACE, was valued at $10billion!

How? What? Why?

No one seems to understand how this happened to a company that RENTS OUT OFFICE SPACE! Read about yet another reason we are doomed as a species here.

Tools for the novice designer

If you don’t subscribe to or visit ProductHunt regularly you really should. It curates new tech products daily based on specific themes. This list is one of the best we’ve seen recently. It has tools for novice and wannabe designers and features everything from free stock images/videos to web templates to typography tools. Pretty sweet.

Pablo 2.0

We love Buffer as a product and a company. They kinda spearheaded the new tech startup movement and dictated how a startup company should be run. Their new product, Pablo, is a nice little tool that allows you to instantly combine images and text for social media posts. Like all good products it makes life that little bit easier without requiring you to actually have to learn how to use it in detail. Winner winner chicken dinner.

Living in the moment

Sometimes i think we all feel a little guilty or weird that we have the urge to film stuff on our phones or tablets. There’s definitely a bit of a backlash about it at the moment with people up in arms that we, as a society, can’t seem to ‘live in the moment’.  However, this guy thinks the exact opposite and has recorded every detail of his life for 5 YEARS!

GGA’s website of the week

Another amazing experiment pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved in browser. This site allows you to write your signature and then create an interactive 3D fractal of it. Literally minutes of fun (but very cool).

… and finally.

This week on October 12th it was Columbus Day in the US. It’s a national holiday for the American’s to remember the great man, heralded a hero, who ‘discovered’ their country. Seems logical right? Erm… The Oatmeal doesn’t think so.
