Prime8: The weekly GGA web roundup! 12/10/2015

13th October 2015 0 comments Article Uncategorised

This week we’ve been learning to do the ‘Tory Powerstand’ George Osbourne and Theresa May unveiled to the world at their conference. It’s great! We feel so powerful and 1%! We’ve powerstood next to famous landmarks, in the bath, on the office roof, next to homeless person and some doctors on their 3rd consecutive 16 hour shift.

Try it for yourselves by following this handy guide:

I wonder if they got a body language coach in? Nah. That would be weird.

Here’s this weeks web roundup…

New stuff from Microsoft

This week Microsoft held their Lumia event and showcased their new product offerings. They’ve gone hardware bonkers and some of it looks really rather good

The real problem with web ads

When Apple released it’s built in ad-blocker for iOS9 it created a war over the pros and cons of web advertising. Seriously – it’s gone a little bit nuts out there in Interwebland. But here’s the always reliable Walt Mossberg to explain the situation and highlight the REAL issue with web ads.

When Nerds become Jocks

We’ve talked about coding as a sport before. This new area of spectator sports is growing at a ridiculous rate in terms of popularity, and we’re already starting to see the superstars of the ‘sport’ emerge. Yep, coding is breeding the next generation of Jocks.

Be a better web developer

Here’s another brilliant list courtesy of Medium. This time it’s tools to help you be an awesome web developer and designer. There’s some seriously great things in this one!

We don’t always own what we buy

Now that we’re in the age of streaming, buying media means that we don’t actually ‘own’ it. More like we rent it forever. Digital collections are owned by the tech companies that we buy them off but what happens when they fall? Who owns what?

Make Gmail work smarter for you

If you use Gmail here’s a bunch of cool little plugins and tools to make it even better and to make you more productive. If you use Outlook then I’m sorry, I think you may be beyond help.

GGA’s website of the week

This may be the best thing we’ve seen on the web in a long, long time. We’ve all had the dream when we’re flying and soaring through the clouds right? Well dream no more!

… and finally.

Another shameless plug from GGA here. Our gaffer, Paul Rhodes, is doing a Half Marathon on 18th October in aid of Acorn Children’s Hospice. It’s a great charity and it will be a remarkable achievement for Paul considering that just a few short months ago he was made nearly completely of lager and chips. If you could spare a few quid for a brilliant cause you can give here or simply text ‘JFDI51 £5’. Thanks!
